Amateur Radio Support - Potomac Pedalers' 100-Mile Bicycle Ride
Mutual Support Request
(Loudoun ARG, Purcellville,
VA., August 24, 2010)
Original Message:

Subject: Amateur Radio Support - Potomac Pedalers' 100-Mile Bicycle Ride
WHO: Amateur radio operators
WHAT: Need communications support for the Potomac Pedalers annual Century bicycle ride
http://www.backroadscentury.org/
WHERE: Throughout Clarke, Warren and Jefferson counties
WHEN: Sunday, September 19, 2010
Attention Amateur Radio Operators:
We have again been asked to provide radio communication support to the Potomac Pedalers Century Ride.
We will need communicators to staff each of three rest stops (White Post, Millwood and Jefferson Elementary), and several SAG (support and gear) vehicle operators.
SAG operators should have either a pickup truck or van capable of transporting riders and supplies, and should be equipped with an exterior/mag-mount antenna, mobile rig and day-long battery power. Rest stop communicators should possess either a two-meter mobile rig in vehicle, or a mobile radio with a mast-mounted antenna, and sufficiant battery capacity for day-long operation.
This 100-mile ride takes place throughout the countryside of the northern Shenandoah Valley, and is truly an enjoyable event. Last year, we had over 800 riders on the course. Following the ride will be a barbecue for volunteers and riders, held at the start/finish point of Clarke County High School. This ride is a good opportunity for you to test your emergency equipment, checklists and operating technique during a controlled Net.
If you are able to help, please reply to me with your preferences as to which position you would like to fill. I will do my best to accommodate your preferences. This is a day-long event, but if you cannot be present for the entire day, we can schedule either a morning or afternoon shift assignment.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via reply email or at: n3mg@arrl.net.
I hope that you will participate, and thank you in advance!

Hi. For your use. Has been sent to the Fairfax ARES list. 73, Tom
LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD
MARINE CORPS MARATHON VOLUNTEERS
WHAT'S HAPPENING, WHAT TO EXPECT, WHAT YOU'LL NEED, AND HOW TO SIGN UP.
(14 July 2010, Washington, D.C.) Amateur Radio volunteers are still
needed for the Marine Corps Marathon. For 32 years Amateur Radio
supported the Marines and, specifically, the U.S. Navy Medical
commanders, to link their aid stations and to be "eyes and ears" on the
26.2-mile course.
Ham sign-up for the 35th running of the MCM opened the first part of
June. But with year-over-year success for Amateur Radio has come
increased responsibilities in race operations. Meeting those
responsibilities drives the need for better preparation and training of
volunteers; the time needed for preparation pushes the sign-up schedule.
We need to finish the initial sign-ups by the end of August to assure
the ability to complete training and practice before the Marathon. That
is why we are asking, if you are interested, to sign up now.

LARG Makes Manassas - 2010
(Loudoun ARG, Purcellville,
VA., July 18, 2010)
It was a busy Spring 2010 but some were planning for this campaign. It's O-Dark-Thirty at F & L Plumbing south of Leesburg. By 0520 hours we had 6 units moving south with Dave - KE4S at Point and Rick - AI1V as Trail. We stayed on 147.48 MHz in case other wanted to join us. By 0555 hours we closed on the gate but they weren't ready to well after 0600. One or two set up in the tailgate area while K3CN and AI2C located their reserve table to display the gear from N4SSN.
It appeared that there were more tailgaters than customers. But by noon, most of the N4SSN stuff was gone. And, there were some really nice old stuff but not all of it was amateur radio related. Many of us ate a lot. They have a big breakfast capability. At 1000 hours, we all took in the 2010 Virginia QSO Party presentation by Gordon - Miller - NQ4K. For Norm - AI2C, it was nice receiving his fifth high single operator award since 1998. This was his best effort with 1500 QSOs. We closed down the N4SSN table by 1330 hours and were home by 1500 hours. It was nice riding with you all. Best Regards, Norm - AI2C

The Pilgrimage: Dayton 2010
(Loudoun ARG, Purcellville,
VA., July 18, 2010)
The Pilgrimage: The anticipation is high and it's a long ~450-mile drive
through West Virginia and across Ohio; finally, there are signs.
Several Loudoun Amateur Radio Group members made the annual pilgrimage to Dayton this year. Some drove and then went on to other cities and events. A member was reported visiting on Saturday after flying out in his POA - Personally Owned Aircraft. Those attending could not remember who. Anyway, John - W4AU drove with Gary - NC4S and Norm - AI2C as Shotguns. Nancy - N1NCY and Paul - N4PD, Sally - K4NOB and Luther - K5NOB, and Marcia - KJ4GYH and Dodson - AJ4EY were there. Maybe there were others. Oh, yes, our very good friend with the Propagation Xtal Ball, Lee Wical - KH6BZF attended. It was great to have another Eye-Ball QSO with Lee. Some stocked up on antenna and other small parts while others ordered up some big ticket items like a new Alpha. Of course, most made it to the Contest Dinner and the DX Dinner. Gary - NC4S and John - W4AU even won a few door prizes. This year, the DX Dinner's prize list topped $50,000. Everyone get lucky.

The Great Little Fox Hunt of 2010
as reported by Denny Boehler - KF4TJI
(Loudoun ARG, Purcellville,
VA., June 1,, 2010)
Following the smallest LARG meeting I can remember on Saturday, May 15, 2010, LARG's smallest fox hunt commenced. There were only two hunters, Denny, KF4TJI and Doug, KJ4BRN. We decided to ride together. Doug moved his equipment to my truck. I set my radio to the fox's frequency, 145.560, and we were off.
We headed west on Rt.7 listening as we went. When we got to Rt. 601, I went south a ways. Doug was curious about the location of the Bluemont repeater, so I drove past it. Then I headed north on 601. No hint of a fox anywhere. Since I did not want to end up in West Virginia, I called Tom, WB3AKD, to check with him. This was supposed to be the easy fox. While talking to Tom, I realized the fox frequency was 145.650, not 145.560! Tom suggested we head back toward Leesburg.
Just east of the Hamilton exit, Rt. 704, we got a strong signal from the fox, but had to go to Rt. 9 to exit. If I had put the right frequency in, we would have found the fox much sooner! We drove back on old Rt. 7 and stopped to get bearings just north of Hamilton. The bearings pointed about 30 degrees. Within three blocks the signal disappeared. We drove a loop north and west of Hamilton without hearing the fox. Then we decided to try the road which parallels Rt. 7 just north of it. There we got a strong signal. We drove back to Rt. 704 and parked near the W&OD. We had no signal from that location. Doug headed west and I headed east on the W&OD. After walking over a quarter mile, I got a faint signal. When it improved a bit, I called Doug on the balloon frequency to tell him I had a signal. He had already started heading my way.

K4LRG Field Day Station Captains Meeting
(Loudoun ARG, Purcellville,
VA., May 22, 2010)
A hearty group of Station Captains for the 2010 Loudoun Amateur Radio Group's 2010 K4LRG Field Day operation met at 8 AM, Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the farm of John Westerman - WB5ODJ, south of Lovettsville, VA. Gary Quinn - NC4S had called for this meeting to discuss possible changes in antenna and station configurations and locations. And, also to complete the scheduling of CW Operators.
In summary, the 2009 operational layout has been changed to provide better antenna performance for the 40-75 Phone and the 20-Phone stations. Both are moved just west and along the lane leading into John's home.
The GOTA station is relocated out of the food and support tent to the south end of this new line of stations. 40-CW and 20-CW will remain as in 2009 and operate out of the garage. 75-Meter dipoles were added to the 20-Phone and the GOTA stations' antenna compliment.
The 40-75-Phone station will use Norm - AI2C recently acquired AB-577 Antenna Mast. The VHF/UHF station will use two sections of Rohn 25 with a 10-foot mast on top. Frank - KØBRA will also equip a satellite antenna system. Please refer to the Equipment Schedule.
Finally, the CW operators flushed out the 72-slots on Station 1, 3, 5. See the Operating Schedule. Read More Details Here
The LARG Business Card
(Loudoun ARG, Purcellville,
VA., February 21, 2010)
The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group serves many public events and we often appear in public places practicing our communications art. To assist our members in better interfacing with and communicating to the general public and to our fellow amateurs, Dodson Brown, AJ4EY, our 2010 Secretary, of Leesburg, VA., has designed and prepared Word Templates for a business card. You may choose one or two sided formats.
Please note, if the card is planned to be printed two sided, make sure that the business card paper is intended for two sided printing. Single sided card paper usually has a coating that causes inkjet ink to not penetrate into the paper on the back side and it will smudge and not dry. Source for single side cards at Office Depot. Source for two side cards at Office Depot. You may choose other card styles.
The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group is an affiliated club of the American Radio Relay League and is permitted to use ARRL logos to promote amateur radio. Enquiries and suggestions may be directed to Dodson at mldbbrwn@verizon.net. You can roll your own: Click Here.

Communications Support For Riders Of The 2009 Reston Century
(Purcellville, VA., December 8, 2009) This was the 27th Annual Reston Bicycle Club's Century
Ride on the trails and roads of Loudoun County. This was a big event with as many as eleven-hundred
riders traveling across Loudoun County. Riders chose between a 34, 62 or 101 mile route with
the longer ones going deep into the heart of Loudoun County.
Again this year, the Loudoun
County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group (LARG)
provide on-site and on-route communications support for this operation. Gary Quinn - NC4S,
Assistant Emergency Coordinator for Loudoun ARES led this communications support and direct
the communications operations from his home station near Waterford, Virginia.
On August 20,
2009, Gary - NC4S issued the Operations Plan and on August 21, 2009, he conducted an on-the-air

The 2009 Berryville Campaign
(Purcellville,
VA., August 11, 2009) It
was O-Dark-Thirty and it looked like rain when we formed up. We had a nice 8-unit convoy out of the old IGA parking lot in eastern Purcellville at 0520 hours local. Everyone had rolled in a
little early and we talked a while before mounting up. Some coffee at the 7-11 helped. Gary Quinn - NC4S was point and Tom - WB9RXJ was trail. It
was still pretty dark as we took Snicker's Gap and rolled across the Shenandoah River at high
speed - like some at 80 mph - into Clarke County. They wouldn't have time before we were on them. Our powder was still dry. On
the way in, some including Norm - AI2C wouldn't answer on the convoy QRG; so, John - W4AU called Norm on his cell phone and was advised that Norm was infiltrating into Berryville for this
campaign. Thus, there was none of CW McCall's Convoy on 147.480 MHz. We closed on the gate in western
Berryville by 0550 hours. Again, they took all our money and we settled in under the big trees in the eastern section. The threat of rain kept most of us from setting out much stuff and instead
we wondered around like the other early birds looking for bargains. Tom - WB9RXJ did do a brisk business with his gear. And, Bill - WF1L shared Dave - KE4S's shelter.
There were many - like 20-plus - Loudoun ARG current and past members who stopped by to say hello and chat.
Some didn't quite make it all the way into the fair grounds; the rain got them. It was nice to see some old friends. Again, my old buddy, Bill Mills - KC4AA de Milledgeville, GA didn't make it
this year but I keep getting all his eMails. So, I know he's kickin'. READ MORE
K4LRG 2009 Filed Day Operation
(Purcellville, VA., November 13, 2009)
The 2009 Loudoun Amateur Radio Group’s K4LRG American Radio Relay League Field Day Operation was our 15th annual event. It is always our premiere operating exercise. This year, under the superb leadership of our 2009 Field Day Committee Chairman, Jeff Slusher - KE5APC and a great team of Captains, over 65 folks planned, organized, installed, supported, and operated Amateur Radio Station K4LRG to a 1st place in the ARRL Virginia Section, 1st place in the ARRL Roanoke Division and 5th in the United States and Canada in the 5A Operating Class. And, K4LRG placed 31st out of 2612 among all entries. Congratulations to all.
This is the story of our great emergency communications exercise. There are twenty-eight sections covering the many aspects of this successful operation. Imagine doing this for real under stressing conditions in response to community needs in distress. We do this "Just In Case." We will be better prepared and we know who we "Can Count On!"
Use the Silver-Gray Menu and Drop-Down White-Yellow Link Tabs in the upper left of each page to navigate. Some 600 photographs and video files were provided by members of the LARG. Photographic credits are contained in the photo file name that is accessible from the Property Tab; just right click on any photograph. Thanks to all. In addition, there are some fifty specially prepared charts and graphs that help tell the story.
A special thank you goes to John Westerman - WB5ODJ who allowed us to roam his family farm. A a special thanks goes to members of A Co, 33rd Battalion, Black Horse Brigade, Virginia Defense Force for providing the great General Purpose Medium Army Tent for our support operations, VHF-UHF and Get-On-The Air Stations. LARG Makes Manassas - 2009
The 2009 Manassas Campaign
(Purcellville, VA., June 17, 2009) We talked about this campaign all spring and our forces were gearing up to move south. Several said they were looking for stuff but most wanted to unload. There was this one fellow who planned to take
the same old boxes of you know what and hoped to unload something. And another said he might put some stuff out. In the end, five loaded rigs moved out at O-Dark-Thirty with Paul - N4PD at the Point and
Z - KU1T in trail. We closed on the gates at 0605 hours local.
Paul - N4PD set up first and most decided to put out a few choice items with Paul's. Everyone stopped to look and comment respectfully on Ray (SK) - K4AJA's Viking. We told them it had been refurbished
by Charlie - K4LJH of Hamilton and was ready to fire up. A bigger audience may have brought a buyer. Everyone was looking for a special deal. Rick - AI1V couldn't part with his very nice HP scanner with
35-mm slide adaptor for $15; no matter what Rick would say the guys worried about whether their old computer could handled it. For about the sixth year, Norm - AI2C carried home his HW-32 and HW-12 Heath
Single Banders. It's clear that few know the joy of dipping the plate and peaking the grid. Norm did find a fellow who wanted to part with his Vibroplex Iambic Deluxe; it was too good to be passed up
and will reside on the farm in Pennsylvania. READ MORE
