July Launch By The Balloon Committee of the Loudoun ARG

The 2001 flight camera by John - KG4L on Flight Sky Eye I near the edge of space.      (Purcellville, VA. July 2, 2008)  The Balloon Committee of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group plan a High Altitude Balloon Flight on Saturday, July 19, 2008. Tom Dawson - WB3AKD, the Chairman of the Balloon Committee, on June 21, announced intentions to try for a new high altitude record. We expect more details in the coming week. In the mean time, all members are encouraged to prepare their tracking equipment. All are also encouraged to prepare their mobile units for participation in the recovery operation.

ATTENTION: This event is in lieu of the regular monthly meeting of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group. However, if the launch is scrubbed then a regular meeting will be held. The decision to go for launch normally occurs late on the night before launch. Stay tuned here and on the LARG's 'QST de K4LRG' Internet eMail Reflector regarding this operation.

Information about previous Balloon Flights by the Balloon Committee of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group is available here. We will most likely follow operating procedures like those used in 2003 for the 2003A HABCAT-1 Flight. All members are requested to study previous operations and the standard operating procedures and participate in this operation.

DURING AMATEUR RADIO WEEK

(Purcellville, VA. June 14, 2008)  The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group (LARG) is gearing up to celebrate Loudoun Amateur Radio Week which has been declared by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors as an annual observance for the third week of June.

In addition to Amateur Radio Week, the group will participate in an annual national emergency preparedness exercise called “Field Day,” June 28 and 29. Field Day is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for Amateur Radio.

LARG will hold this year’s Field Day at Banshee Reeks Park, south of Leesburg, and will be operating from 2:00pm, Saturday, June 28 until 2:00pm, Sunday, June 29. “We hope that anyone who is interested in seeing what Amateur Radio is all about will visit us,” Bill Buchholz stated. The public is cordially invited to visit our Field Day site at 21085 The Woods Rd Leesburg, VA 20175-6553, on Saturday between 2:30pm and 4:00pm and Sunday between 10:00am and 1:00pm.

During Field Day, operators and Amateur Radio Clubs across the country set up in local parks, at shopping malls, or even in their own backyards, and get on the air using generators or battery power. Field Day was designed to test operators' abilities to set up and operate portable stations under emergency conditions such as the loss of electricity. "We want the community to know that in the event of an emergency, we will be ready to assist in any way we can, says Bill Buchholz, LARG President. “While people often think that cell phones or other communications technologies have replaced ham radio, we can still provide an important communications service that others can't."

Field Day is a serious test of skill, but it is also a contest for fun and the largest "on-air" operating event each year in the United States. During the weekend, radio operators try to contact as many other Field Day stations as possible. More than 30,000 Amateur Radio operators across the country and Canada participated in last year's event.

Today there are more than 700,000 Amateur Radio operators in the United States and more than 2.5 million worldwide. To find out more about Amateur Radio, how you can get started, or more information about Field Day, contact Randy Sly at w4xj@arrl.net. Information on Amateur Radio is also available on the web at www.helloradio.org. The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group’s Internet home is www.k4lrg.org .

Our General Class instructors will do everything possible to answer your questions, but they may not have the time to stop the class momentum to explain basic electronics fundamentals. The LARG’s Thursday Night HF SSB – Voice Net
This is a Loudoun Count On Us Operation
Expands To Technician & Novice Operators On 10-Meters

(Purcellville, VA. February 25, 2008)   REVISED NET TIMES & FREQUENCIES The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group conducts a SSB – Voice Net on Thursday nights at 8 PM local on 3675.00 kHz +/- the interference - QRM; tune around a little. Besides conducting the net on the primary net frequency, the Net Control Station (NCS) selects a somewhat clear frequency above 3803 kHz for General Class Licensed Operators to use to check into the net. The NCS announces this frequency several times before actually requesting stations to check in. This gives stations time to find the 75-Meters band secondary frequency and tune up accordingly. The General Class Licensed Operators transmit on the 3803 + kHz frequency but listen to the net on 3675.00 kHz.

New 10-Meter Band Technician – Novice Secondary Net Frequency. Starting on Thursday, January 31, 2008, this concept was expanded to check in Technician and Novice Licensed Operators. Starting February 28, 2008, the NCS will close operations on 75-Meters NO LATER THAN 8:45 PM and move the net to 10-Meters to check in Technician and Novice stations. All members are encouraged to move to the 10-Meter frequency. The 10-Meter net frequency is 28.405 kHz.

Eighteen members of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group and Loudoun Amateur Radio Emergency Service, along with family members, assembled in Leesburg on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2007, for the annual emergency communications exercise for First Night Leesburg. Twenty-one operational sites throughout downtown Leesburg were supported by our super communicators. Actually, it was more than an exercise; it was the real thing. We had one 911 support mission to the Cornwall Campus of the Loudoun Hospital. Tom Dawson - WB3AKD went to the assistance of these folks. But most of the night was very uneventful and peaceful.

New SteppIR and Tower at Station KE4S

(Purcellville, VA., September 30, 2007)   Dave Putman - KE4S with the help of many in Loudoun Amateur Radio Group has completed installation of a super antenna and tower system.

This was a year plus effort by Dave. The tower was listed for sale on the Potomac Valley Radio Club Reflector in mid-August by N4XP and Dave quickly jumped - the price was right. We hauled the tower out of Easton, Maryland last September 2006. Dave applied for and received all the necessary local zoning and building permits last fall.

The tower base was dug and poured in November 2006. The tower was erected in December 2006. The SteppIR arrived in early 2007 and Dave spent several months assembling and testing the system.

And, in September 2007 the big 4-element SteppIR antenna was assembled on the tower. Dave reports having no difficulty working the DX. This is the picture story of this effort.       ( READ MORE  )

(Reported and Photographed By Norm Styer - AI2C de Clarkes Gap, Virginia. Released to the K4LRG.ORG Internet Site on August 22, 2007.)    We had a big 10-unit convoy out of the IGA in eastern Purcellville at 0520 hours. Everyone had rolled in a little early and we talked a while before mounting up. Gary Quinn - NC4S was point and and late comer Jeff Slusher - KE5APC relieved Paul Dluehosh - N4PD as trail. In between were Dave Putman - KE4S, Norm Styer - AI2C, John Unger - W4AU with Charlie Preston - K4LJH, Chris Fristad - KT9N, Rick Denney - KR9D, Dave Wentland - KE4OKY, and Grant Russell - KB3EMT.

We closed on the gate in western Berryville by 0550 hours. They were ready to take our money. It was nice to see Tina Jones - K8TMJ at the gate again. We collected a lot of followers as our big convoy moved east to the big shade tree area. They we using flashlight to look into our trucks and back seats. "Do you have any...?" We sold a lot of stuff by 0615 hours. Truly, the early birds always gets the worms.       ( READ MORE  )

The Dual Foxes Of 2007

(As Told By The Ghost Rider on July 21, 2007) The Ghost Rider was up at 0600 hours and was ready to roll off of Canby. He checked his handy Yaesu Model VX-170 2-Meter Transceiver that he kept by his bedside and there it was: a big beautiful Charlie Whiskey signal on 145.650 MHz. The tones made him feel good! It would be a nice day. It was two-thirds full scale. He thought it must be in his backyard or down in Digges Valley. He figured this would be a piece of cake.

As he listen to the Charlie Whiskey, he copied frames 5 then 6; so, it was just activated. Then there was something strange about the signal, there was a weaker set of tones resending everything again about 10 seconds after the first set of louder coded signals. That was really different. He thought no more of it, as maybe Tom Dawson - WB3AKD, the keeper of Foxes, had dreamed up a new modulation scheme or the Fox had blown a gasket.

Anyway, off to the IHOP in sleepy Leesburg and then to the LARG monthly meeting.  ( Read More  )

(Purcellville, VA., August 21, 2007)   A record group of over 66 Northern Virginia amateur radio operators, families and friends from Loudoun and surrounding counties enjoyed a fantastic Field Day operation set in the tradition of a portable emergency field environment. We talked to a lot of folks, we worked very hard and very smartly, we met some new friends and renewed many old friendships, and we had a lot of very fine food and drinks. We had Morse, fone, Automatic Position Reporting, HF digital messaging, and satellite communications running on most of the amateur radio band from 80-meters to 432 MHz. Oh yes, we had a lot of fun.

Below is how it all got started in February and the Site Guide at the bottom of this and every page will take you to each of our stations and our supporting operations. You'll also find reports on our pubic relations, our operating rates and our score.

This year marks an influx of new operators and those yearning to be an amateur. It also marks the beginning of some fine operators; it's so nice to see the new folks stepping forward. The Charlie Whiskey guys are going to have to be on their toes in future Field Days for it is sensed that the fone folks have broke the Code. They have been "bitten by the bug!"

We really appreciate Gary and Patty Quinn for hosting us; we all thank you. And, a special thanks goes to Mary and Charlie Preston for feeding us all weekend and a very special thank you is sent to Suzanne Grobbel for the great Sunday morning breakfast.

It was nice riding with you all. Best Regards, Norm Styer - AI2C de Clarkes Gap, Virginia.     (  READ MORE )

LARG at Manassas 2007

(Purcellville, VA., June 3, 2007)   The LARG took in Manassas 2007 again this year. We thought about the bad weather reports but we were not discouraged. The problem was the remains of Tropical Storm Barry which blew up the along the east coast on Sunday and made tailgating at Manassas a real challenge. Barry's remnants were expected to bring 1-3 inches of rain along the Mid-Atlantic and New England states through Monday. We had gathered at the old F&L Plumbing outfit just south of Leesburg at US Route 15 and Route 704 at 0515 hours. Dave Putman - KE4S took point and our convoy of five vehicles headed south with Norm Styer - AI2C in trail. We hit the gate at 0555 hours and got prime tailgating sites all together. We came prepared with popup shelters and quickly got everything laid out. They were waiting on us. By 0900 hours some of us were packing it in and heading north. Norm Styer - AI2C managed $200 in sales for very old gear donated to the LARG. By 1000 hours sales had dropped off as the rain was pretty steady and folks stopped looking for bargains. Some folks took in the presentation on the Virginia QSO Party while others packed it in and did one last sweep.

Unlike the 9-11 Operation but like the 2004 emergency exercise, planning and preparation were begun earlier in the year. Tom Dawson, WB3AKD of Round Hill, the Emergency Coordinator for Loudoun County Amateur Radio Emergency Service, coordinated planning and participation by Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William, Arlington, Alexandria, Fall Church City, and other Northern Virginia elements of ARES.   (Read More)

W3ZI Multi-Multi Operation in the 2006 Pennsylvania QSO Party

Another eXtreme Adventure By The Guys and Gals Of The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group of Northern Virginia

This is the W3ZI Multi-Multi Station operating crew. This photograph taken on site on Saturday morning before start of the Pennsylvania QSO Party. Photograph by Larry Hughes - K3HE of Leesburg, Virginia. This photograph marked up by Denny Boehler - KF4TJi who will print this as the QSL card for this operation.

(Loudoun ARG, Purcellville, Virginia - December 11, 2006.)    This year, with the encouragement and leadership of Bill Buchholz - K8SYH, a group of eleven members of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group of Northern Virginia organized and executed a Field Day style operation in the October 2006 Pennsylvania QSO Party. For many years, Bill - K8SYH had operated as a portable station in the PAQP from a campground in the rare Somerset County; John Unger - W4AU had operated out-of-state from Virginia for many years; and Norm Styer -  AI2C, operated /3 from his family farm in Berks County in 2004 part time.

Originally, we thought it would be fun to mount a mini-M/M or M/2 operation from that same location in Somerset, but as interest was generated and it looked like we may have as many as a dozen operators, Norm - AI2C, generously offered to let us use his family farm in Berks for our 2006 PAQP operation. However, we were not going to have the luxury of just showing up and operating at a "real" M/M station. The only permanent antennas at Norm's farm are 40 and 80 meter dipoles.

The planning evolved over a couple of months, and we finally zeroed in on a M/M station with 5 HF rigs. Mark Johnson - W3ZI decided to accompany us and let us use his fine business callsign; that made things easier.

Our team shown to the left were (front left - right) Norm Styer - AI2C, Chester Kmak - WA9LAZ, Tom Garasic - NA4MA, Mark Johnson - W3ZI, Gary Quinn - NC4S, (rear Left - right) Denny Boehler - KF4TJI, John Unger - W4AU, Carol Boehler - KF4TJJ, BA Buchholz - QM and Chief Cook, Bill Buchholz - K8SYH, and Larry Hughes - K3HE.
